As cells become damaged, instead of dying, they continue to survive and others are formed when they are not needed. These extra cells can continuously divide, causing tumours. These can either be malignant or benign. Malignant tumours spread into and invade nearby tissues. They also sometimes break off and travel to other parts of the body.
